House Rewire FAQs

How do I know if my house needs a rewire?

Common warning signs include:

  • An old fuse box with rewirable fuses, or a consumer unit with no RCD protection
  • Round-pin sockets, or very few sockets in each room
  • Cables with rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed insulation
  • Flickering lights, buzzing sockets or a burning smell
  • Scorch marks around sockets or switches
  • Frequent tripped circuits or blown fuses
  • Sockets or switches that are warm to the touch
How often should a house be rewired?

There’s no fixed rule, but wiring typically lasts 25 to 40 years depending on the cable type and how well it’s been looked after. Homes with wiring older than this should be inspected. A rewire may not be necessary if the installation is in good condition.

How long does a rewire take?

Most 2 to 3-bed houses take around [5 to 7] working days. Larger or more complex properties can take longer. We’ll give you a clear timeline before we start.

Do I need to move out while the work is carried out?

Usually not. We work room by room and aim to restore power at the end of each day where possible. That said, a rewire is disruptive, with floorboards lifted and some dust and noise. Some customers prefer to stay elsewhere for a few days, especially if they have young children, pets or work from home.

Can you rewire a house that’s already decorated or occupied?

Yes. We do this regularly and take extra care to protect your property. Rewiring an empty or partly renovated house is quicker and cheaper, but it’s not essential.
